Across the country, millions of children attend schools surrounded by asphalt and heat instead of trees, shade, and nature. Congress has a timely opportunity to change that by investing in green, climate-resilient schoolyards that support student health, learning, and community well-being.

Why This Matters
Nearly 50 million students attend public schools nationwide, many on campuses with little access to safe, shaded outdoor space. The Revitalizing America’s Schoolyards Act would create a federal grant program to help schools transform paved schoolyards into green, nature-rich spaces with trees, gardens, outdoor classrooms, and play areas.

As your constituent, I am writing to urge you to co-sponsor and support Sen. Martin Heinrich's Revitalizing America’s Schoolyards Act (S. 4258), and its House companion (H.R.8303) introduced by Rep. Summer Lee.

Across the country, millions of children attend schools where outdoor spaces are dominated by asphalt and heat, offering little opportunity for safe play, outdoor learning, or respite from extreme weather. The Revitalizing America’s Schoolyards Act (RSYA) would address this challenge by creating a federal grant program to help schools transform schoolyards into green, nature-rich spaces with trees, gardens, outdoor classrooms, and areas for play and community use.

Research and real-world experience show that green schoolyards improve students’ physical and mental health, support hands-on learning, reduce extreme heat, manage stormwater, and strengthen climate resilience. The RSYA also prioritizes funding for high-need and under-resourced communities, helping advance equity while investing in student well-being.

By authorizing grants through the U.S. Department of Education, S. 4258/H.R.8303 would empower schools and local partners to turn schoolyards into healthier, more resilient spaces that benefit students and surrounding neighborhoods alike. These improvements can also help cool school campuses, absorb stormwater, and provide shared community spaces outside of school hours, benefits that extend well beyond the school day.

I urge you to co-sponsor and support the Revitalizing America’s Schoolyards Act (S. 4258/H.R.8303) and help ensure every child has access to safe, green, and inspiring outdoor spaces at school.
