Since our founding, Openlands has strengthened and shaped policy at all levels of government to clean up our rivers, protect our shorelines, and give people access to the waterways flowing through their communities.
This is because Illinois has some of the most beautiful and accessible streams in the Midwest, but our right to responsibly use them for recreational purposes is under attack. Misinformed attempts have been made throughout Illinois to restrict access to these important bodies of water, which will negatively impact both responsible recreational activities and local businesses built around outdoor recreation.
An Illinois Supreme Court ruling recently noted that access to riverways should not be unreasonably restricted and called on the Illinois General Assembly to legislate our right to our shared naturally occurring rivers and streams.
In response, legislation was recently introduced, HB 1568, to affirm Illinoisans’ right to recreate on our shared water resources responsibly.
Don’t let your right to access some of your favorite Illinois Water Trails float away. Contact your state legislators and ask them to support HB 1568 today!
