Chicago's trees are in danger. A new ordinance, O2023-0004235, has been introduced in City Council that expedites the removal of healthy, mature trees. Our alderpersons need to hear from people like you to hear why this is bad policy. Trees are one of the best nature-based solutions to climate change and provide numerous other benefits. They mitigate floods, deter crime, reduce energy use, improve mental health- and much more. Our oldest trees provide the greatest environmental benefit, but take decades to reach maturity. It is essential to ensure new laws protect the environmental future of Chicago and work to keep a healthy tree canopy. The short-sighted and unnecessary removal of mature, healthy trees will have negative effects on Chicago's climate resiliency for decades to come. The proposed ordinance broadly and incorrectly defines what trees are "dangerous,” dooming Chicago's trees without proper assessment. The measure would transition risk assessment responsibilities away from professional arborists and give amateurs the ability to influence hazard prioritization, potentially placing both trees and people at risk. When making determinations around tree risk and the safety of our communities, it is of utmost importance to defer to professionals who have the necessary experience and training to do so. Furthermore, the ordinance has not been reviewed by the Urban Forestry Advisory Board (UFAB), which was formed by the Chicago City Council to review policies that will impact our urban tree canopy. We need people like you to help advocate for our environment and demonstrate how our actions today will affect generations to come. Write your alderperson and ask them to please oppose O2023-0004235. |
