Message:

As your constituent, I am writing to urge you to support sustained funding for USDA Forest Service programs that protect and expand urban and community forests in the fiscal year 2027 budget.

Healthy trees are critical infrastructure for communities of all sizes. Federal investments in Urban and Community Forestry, through the State, Private, and Tribal Forestry appropriations, help local governments and nonprofits deliver shovel‑ready projects that reduce extreme heat and flooding, improve public health, and create skilled local jobs. These funds are efficiently deployed, frequently leveraged by states and private partners, and deliver long‑term returns for taxpayers. We request a funding level of no less than $50 million for FY2027 to match authorized levels and growing demand.

I also encourage retained support for Forest Health Management on cooperative lands, at a minimum of $42 million, which helps stop invasive pests before they spread from cities into surrounding forests, preventing costly tree loss and reducing future wildfire and disaster risks. Investments in prevention and early detection save communities billions of dollars over time.

In addition, continued funding for forest research and the Forest Inventory and Analysis program ensures decision‑makers have the science and data needed to manage forests effectively, including in urban and community settings where risks are growing fastest. Please provide at least $39.7 million for FIA program funding and $63.4 million for salaries & expenses and protect $3.9 million in IT funding to ensure tools and data systems remain operational.

These programs protect communities, lower long‑term costs, and deliver lasting benefits nationwide. Thank you for your leadership and for representing our community.
