Across the country, Greenways and other multimodal paths have proven a cost-effective investment connecting neighborhoods to parks, jobs, schools, and transit. However, federal support for greenways, trails, and other active transportation options is at real risk as Congress prepares for its next Surface Transportation bill. Speaking up now shows that our communities value safe, affordable, and healthy ways to travel while also defending natural areas that protect our region’s land and water.  

Why This Matters 

• Greenways strengthen local economies by spurring local economic development, creating construction, maintenance, and recreation-based jobs, and by providing affordable transportation alternatives. 
• Greenways improve public health and help fight chronic disease by promoting physical activity, expanding access to nature, and creating safe and accessible recreation opportunities for people of all ages. 
• Greenways promote environmental resilience by encouraging low-carbon transportation, reducing flooding, supporting urban cooling, and protecting waterways and wildlife corridors. 

Greenways and active transportation infrastructure make it easier for people to get to jobs, school, and to use essential services—particularly in neglected urban and rural areas which too often struggle with these opportunities. The Parks to People Active Transportation Act (H.R. 7751) would create a $300 million fund under USDOT supporting greenway projects, authorize millions in planning and design grant funding, and call for periodic reports to Congress to review and implement best practices.
