PROTECT IMPERILED WILDLIFE UNDER THE ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT
Millions of Monarch butterflies migrate through Chicago every year. They feed on milkweed plants in community gardens, parks, and other natural areas to fuel their journeys between Winter clusters in Mexico and Summer homes in more northern latitudes. They are our transient neighbors who serve as welcome harbingers of Summer… and they need our help.
The Western population of Monarch butterflies has been nearly eradicated. The Eastern population that migrates through the Midwest has declined more than 85% in the last 25 years. These are among the findings of studies recently completed by the U.S . Fish and Wildlife Service (“USFWS”). These findings conclude that Monarchs merit protection under the Endangered Species Act (“ESA”).
Despite this conclusion, USFWS claims that it does not have the resources to list the Monarch under the ESA until 2024! That is because dozens of other similarly imperiled species are already being considered ahead of the Monarch. USFWS must be fully funded so that it can list the monarch as well as the numerous other imperiled species in need of the ESA's protections.
No species that is in such rapid decline can wait so long to receive the important protections that the ESA provides. WE MUST ACT NOW to ensure that future generations will be able to enjoy Monarchs as they migrate through our communities.
Please complete the form at right to tell your Federal elected officials that imperiled species cannot wait! Ask them to increase resources available to USFWS for studying and listing imperiled species under the ESA. Thank you!
