Illinois Wetlands Need Our Help
A disastrous U.S. Supreme Court ruling recently eliminated the federal protections that many of Illinois' waterways and wetlands depended on. This decision undermined decades of clean water protections afforded by the U.S. Clean Water Act and moved the ongoing fight to defend our natural and open spaces in the wrong direction.
Wetlands improve water quality, provide important flood control, protect our groundwater, and preserve species diversity and endangered habitats, but now lack the critical federal protections that helped keep them safe.
Unfortunately, in the absence of federal protections, Illinois currently lacks a comprehensive program to protect these wetlands. Our state has already lost about 90% of its wetland acreage and failure to act swiftly will only cause that number to increase irreversibly.
It is up to us in Illinois to follow the science and quickly enact safeguards that protect Illinois' waterways and wetlands in the aftermath of this devastating decision by the U.S. Supreme Court before it is too late.
Encourage your state representative and state senator to protect Illinois wetlands that have been left vulnerable by voting 'Yes' on HB 5386 and SB 771, and by becoming a co-sponsor.
